About Joe
Joseph Knight B.Mus (Hons) P.G.C.E. is a graduate of Huddersfield University where he studied performance under the legendary Geoffrey Whitham; Composition under composers Peter Lawson & Margaret Lucy Wilkins; Brass Band Arranging under Sandy Smith & played under the baton of Philip McCann.
Composition & Arranging
Joe has written extensively for Brass Band and solo brass instruments over the years, although that is by no means the limit of his capabilities. He has written his first full symphony, smaller works for orchestra, piano music & tutor books, small ensemble music (including string quartet and brass quintet), choral music, two children's musicals and for many other groups as well.
He has recently completed a number of small commissions including marches, brass band arrangements, solo works and other larger works for mixed ensembles and soloists.
Performing
Joe plays in three different professional groups. In two he plays Tuba and in the third he plays the instrument on which he graduated from The University of Huddersfield, the Bb Baritone. The groups he plays in are:

The 12 Bore Blues Band - A traditional jazz quintet playing jazz from all eras with a strangely dixie twist!

The Eine kleine Oompah Band - A Bavarian style Oompah Band with fun and frolics for all concerned!

Pype Dream Brass - A brass quintet which plays all styles of music from classical to jazz, from contemporary to traditional!

Teaching & Conducting
Joe was for a number of years the Head of Music at the Benjamin Britten High School in Lowestoft Suffolk. He now teaches from his shop in Lowestoft, https://www.takenotemusic.co.uk.
He teaches performance on brass and piano and theory, and has an extremely high pass rate for his pupils. His fastest from grade 0 - 5 ABRSM theory pass was in just 6 weeks (this is an extreme case and is NOT recommended as a timescale to realistically pass the exam)!
He is a freelance conductor available for rehearsals and concerts, having had extensive experience of orchestral, brass band and wind band conducting.

He is a father of two, his daughters, Esther and Anna, both, among other ensembles, play trombone and cornet respectively in the Grimethorpe Youth Band and the Yorkshire Youth Brass Band. Joe is a Christian and has written several pieces of Church music.
